Cat III films: welcome into China’s most demented minds
In case you’ve missed it, here is a pretty mind-blowing “exploration” of China’s very own brand of soft porn, courtesy of VICE magazine (who else could come up with this kind of stuff anyway?): Wanking To Surrealism. Arthouse asian cinema has always had quite a reputation for weird fetishist shit and rarely disappoints when it comes to borderline torture porn – In the Realm of the Senses and Audition to name the most respectable ones – but even by these standards, category III movies (as they are rated in Hong Kong where they are produced) are truly something else.
My favourite clip of the lot is probably the scene from Chinese Torture Chamber Story, with its House of The Flying Daggers rape-fight in the air. Absolutely mental, with extra points for the sound effects. Take that Gaspar Noé and your stupid CGI dicks.
